The trend gained major traction online after actress Pamela Anderson appeared at the Golden Globe Awards 2026 with simple nude nails. Soon after, stars like Margot Robbie and Rosamund Pike followed suit at major events, including the Critics' Choice Awards.

By the time awards season and fashion events rolled around, the understated manicure had become impossible to ignore. Moreover, unlike beauty trends that focused on standing out, bare nails are all about looking effortless.

While for many social media users, the look fits perfectly with the aesthetics that have dominated the internet in recent years, "clean girl", "quiet luxury", "old money", and wellness-focused lifestyles.

According to Rodulfo, the issue isn't the manicure itself. She enjoys both natural nails and elaborate nail art. Rodulfo's concern revolves around the language surrounding the trend.

Many influencers and fashion commentators have described bare nails as more "classy", "elevated", or "high status" than other nail styles. Rodulfo argues that these labels can carry deeper implications about who is considered fashionable, professional, or socially acceptable.

She points out that the beauty standards have historically favoured certain appearances while dismissing others, particularly styles that stem from Black, Latina, Asian, and other marginalised communities.


As a result, what seems like a harmless beauty preference can quickly become a larger conversation about inclusion and representation.

Here's where the conversation gets deeper. Bare nails may seem like a beauty choice, but sociologists would describe them as a form of social signalling.

This creates a paradox; the trend presents itself as simple and accessible, yet it can quietly function as a marker of privilege.
