The FIFA World Cup 2026 is turning into a tournament for goalkeepers. From Curaçao's Eloy Room to Cape Verde's breakout star Vozinha, shot-stoppers from underdog nations have delivered one standout performance after another.

Adding his name to that list is Iran's Alireza Beiranvand, who has been making headlines with his remarkable displays between the posts. The Iranian goalkeeper has yet to concede a goal in the tournament, playing a crucial role in keeping his team's hopes of reaching the next stage alive. As fans marvel at his heroics, many are curious about the man behind the gloves. Here's the inspiring story of Beiranvand's journey.

Background of Alireza Beiranvand: From nomadic shepherd to professional goalkeeper

Alireza Beiranvand’s journey to professional football is one of the sport’s most inspiring rags-to-riches stories. At present, he is regarded as one of Asian football’s greatest success stories. Born in the village of Sarab-e Yas in Iran, the 33-year-old grew up in a Kurdish Laki nomadic family and spent much of his childhood working as a shepherd. During those years, he regularly played Dalparan, a traditional game that involved throwing heavy rocks over long distances. Unknowingly, the game helped develop the upper-body strength that would later become one of his greatest assets as a goalkeeper.

His dream of becoming a footballer was not initially supported by his family. According to The Guardian, his father opposed his ambitions and even destroyed his football gloves and kit in an attempt to discourage him.

But Beiranvand refused to give up. As a teenager, he borrowed money and moved to Tehran to pursue his dream. Life in the capital was far from easy. He endured periods of homelessness and took on jobs as a car washer, street cleaner, pizza maker, and factory labourer to survive before finally earning an opportunity with the youth academy of Naft Tehran F.C., which was the first major step toward fulfilling his dream of becoming a professional footballer.

World Cup masterclass

If you feel you already heard the name before and cannot remember, here’s what you should know. Beiranvand gained global recognition at the 2018 FIFA World Cup when he saved a penalty from football icon Cristiano Ronaldo during Iran’s group-stage clash against Portugal. The dramatic save cemented his reputation as one of Asia’s elite goalkeepers.

His exceptional distribution skills have also made history. Beiranvand holds two Guinness World Records for the longest football throw and the longest drop kick, achievements that highlight the incredible arm and leg strength he developed from his unconventional upbringing.

His performances have remained crucial for Iran, including a standout display at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he produced a 7-save clean sheet against Belgium and earned Superior Player of the Match honours. To add, Iran did not yet concede any goal in their two matches played till now.

Footballing career and trophies

At club level, the Iranian footballer has enjoyed immense success, particularly with Persepolis F.C. and later with Tractor S.C. He has won multiple Persian Gulf Pro League titles, domestic cups, and Iranian Super Cups, while also lifting the Belgian Cup during his stint with Royal Antwerp F.C.

On the international stage, he has represented Iran in 3 FIFA World Cups and 3 AFC Asian Cups, becoming one of the country’s most reliable and celebrated players. He is recognised as the Persian Gulf Pro League’s Best Goalkeeper for four consecutive seasons. His story continues to inspire aspiring footballers across Iran and beyond, proving that even the most difficult beginnings can lead to extraordinary achievements

From a childhood marked by poverty and hardship to setting Guinness World Records and starring on football's biggest stage, Beiranvand's journey is a testament to determination and perseverance. Beiranvand’s career stands as an inspiring example of how perseverance, sacrifice, and unwavering belief can transform adversity into greatness. He holds Guinness World Records for Longest Football Throw (61.0026 metres) against South Korea in 2016 and Longest Football Drop Kick (78.014 metres) achieved in 2019.

With only one match left to qualify for the next stage, Iran is set to face African giant Egypt on June 27. As it stands, they need to win the match against the Group Toppers to not bid farewell soon.
