Falling in love after two conversations: Are we catching feelings or just craving decency?

Are Gen Z really falling in love after just two conversations, or is it about craving basic decency in modern dating?

It starts innocently enough. Two conversations, maybe on Instagram DMs, a dating app, or even a late-night WhatsApp chat, and suddenly, it feels like something real is happening. You’re smiling at your phone, rereading texts, and low-key imagining a future together. For many Gen Zs, this isn’t unusual. In fact, “falling in love” after just a couple of meaningful interactions has become almost a shared experience.
But is it really love?

We exist in a hyper-digital world where communication is constant but connection often feels rare. We’re used to ghosting, dry replies, situationships, and conversations that go nowhere. So when someone shows up and does the bare minimum, asks questions, replies on time, remembers details, it feels different. Special, even.
And that’s where things get complicated.
What we often label as “falling in love” might actually be a mix of excitement, validation, and relief. Relief that someone is finally treating us with a basic level of respect. Excitement because, let’s be honest, good conversation is hard to come by. And validation because being seen and heard, even briefly, hits deeper than we expect.

Personally, I don’t think it’s about falling in love after two conversations. That feels like a stretch. But I do think we’ve reached a point where even half-decent communication feels extraordinary. Our standards have, in many ways, dropped so low that kindness, consistency, and basic interest now feel like grand romantic gestures.
And that says more about the dating culture than it does about our emotions.
When you’re constantly navigating emotionally unavailable people, mixed signals, or conversations that feel like pulling teeth, someone who simply tries stands out. You start attaching meaning quickly because it’s rare. You fill in the blanks. You project potential. And before you know it, you’re emotionally invested in someone you barely know.

Social media also plays a role here. We’re used to fast-paced interactions and instant gratification. Everything moves quickly, trends, friendships, even relationships. So naturally, feelings start to speed up too. Two good conversations can feel like ten because of how intensely we experience them.
