We often tend to differentiate the fictional world from the real world but sometimes our fictional dreams become a reality. Many of the kids watched Naruto and developed the ‘Never Give up’ attitude.

But Japan took it one step further as they are now hosting an annual ninja exam titled, Koka-ryu Ninja Certificate Exam, where anyone can become a ninja if they pass. Over 130 people have already signed up to challenge themselves and become the ‘Hokage’ level like Naruto. Here are all the details you need to know.

Japan conducting Ninja exam - Koka-ryu Ninja Certificate Exam

The Japanese Research Association and local tourism bodies are currently hosting the Koka-ryu Ninja Certificate Exam which is a real, annual cultural exam designed to preserve the cultural traditions, and skills of the historic Koka ninja clan. It is held every June in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, which is one of the historic ninja heartlands.

This remains open to everyone, including foreign tourists and children, within the age from 9 to 76.

Exam details

The annual ninja examination is structured into three progressive levels designed to test both intellectual knowledge and practical skills. The Beginner Level introduces candidates to the fundamentals of ninja culture through a 50-question multiple-choice written examination covering basic ninja history and ninjutsu. Participants must also complete a practical test by throwing shuriken, or ninja stars, at a target positioned three meters away, blending historical knowledge with a hands-on demonstration of traditional skills.

The Intermediate and Advanced levels become increasingly demanding. Intermediate candidates sit for a more complex written examination focused on strategic history, ninja tools, and geographical knowledge associated with the shinobi tradition.

The Advanced Level is the most rigorous, requiring examinees to complete an intensive written test and submit a specialized research report, demonstrating not only their understanding of ninja history but also their ability to conduct scholarly research on the subject.

To pass any level, candidates must achieve a minimum score of 60 percent. The beginner examination boasts an impressive pass rate of around 90 percent, while the intermediate and advanced levels become progressively more selective, with pass rates of approximately 70 percent and 55 percent, respectively.

Expression of culture, tradition and heritage

One of the most unique aspects of the examination is its emphasis on cultural immersion and creativity. Beginner-level participants can earn valuable bonus points simply by attending the exam dressed in a traditional or imaginative ninja costume, known as a shinobi shozoku.

Although successful candidates do not receive a legal professional license or become real-life covert operatives, passing the examination grants them official symbolic recognition as Koka ninjas. Graduates are presented with an authentic hand-scroll certificate (parchment), marking their ceremonial transformation from enthusiasts of ninja history into certified scholars of Japan's legendary shadow warriors.

How did the fans react?

Fans are already thrilled even though not everyone can participate. Fans have commented, “I’ve been working on unlocking my sharigan” and “I will become king of the pirates, dattebayo.”

A Harry Potter fan reacted saying, “this is the closest we’re getting to a hogwarts letter.”

While excited ones claimed, “on my way to Japan…incoming hokage” and “Sign me up immediately.”

A user hilariously commented, “Day 1 learning to walk on water” while another stated, “mom said anime wouldn’t help me in life, japan: hold my kunai.”
