The FIFA World Cup 2026 is in its peak, with the group stage almost coming to an end. So far, the tournament's highest goalscorer is none other than Lionel Messi, followed by the new-generation stars Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland. Both the Frenchman and the Norwegian have continued to showcase their brilliance on football's biggest stage.

However, it seems Mbappé is making headlines not only for his world-class talent but also for the laughs he provides online. The French superstar already carries the infamous 'Dictator' tag among fans, and it appears he is 'not beating the allegations' anytime soon after videos of him allegedly ‘directing’ groundskeepers during the France vs Iraq delay on June 22. Even commentators joined in on the joke, shouting, "The General leading from the front" after Mbappé scored the opening goal.

‘Dictator Mbappé’: How did the rumour originate?

The "Dictator Mbappé" meme emerged from a combination of real-world contract drama and exaggerated internet jokes that portrayed Mbappé as an all-powerful figure in football.

The satirical lore suggests that anyone who crosses the 27-year-old forward is immediately benched, sold, or otherwise punished, inspiring countless TikTok edits, Reddit posts, and memes that depict him as a military ruler or authoritarian leader.

The joke first gained traction during Mbappé's time at Paris Saint-Germain. When he signed a lucrative contract extension in 2022, reports claimed that PSG had granted him an unprecedented level of influence within the club. Fans ran with the idea, joking that Mbappé had effectively become a sporting director, capable of deciding transfers, selecting lineups, and even influencing managerial decisions.

The meme entered "dictator" territory in early 2024 following a minor legal dispute involving a French influencer and kebab shop owner. The influencer had jokingly named a burger after Mbappé and described the bun as being "as round as Mbappé's skull". Rather than ignoring the remark, Mbappé's legal representatives reportedly sent a cease-and-desist letter. The internet seized on the incident, portraying him as an overly powerful figure using legal action to silence even the smallest critics.

Since then, every moment in which Mbappé appears to direct teammates, argue with officials, or influence decisions has been folded into the joke, further cementing the viral "Dictator Mbappé" persona online.

How did it escalate?

The narrative exploded after his high-profile move to Real Madrid in 2024, fuelled by two primary incidents. A clip went viral where Mbappé appeared to command his teammates to skip a guard of honour for FC Barcelona.

When Real Madrid experienced managerial friction and parted ways with staff, rumours immediately blamed Mbappé, alleging he ordered the sackings because a coach got in his way. Though extended footage later debunked these narratives, the internet had already run with the joke.

Social media users actively keep the joke alive by creating cinematic, dark-themed video edits. Whenever a teammate is unexpectedly benched, transferred, or gets injured after a perceived disagreement with Mbappé, creators post military edits with captions like “Orders from the Supreme Leader” or “You have crossed the Dictator”.

Dictator went to World Cup 2026

The joke has become so mainstream that football fans have even brought physical “Kylian Dictator” banners to international matches in the FIFA World Cup 2026 matches. In recent news, the French footballer asked the pitch staff to clear grass and directed them to clear heavy standing water from the flooded pitch during a lengthy weather delay in the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between France and Iraq.

The incident took place during halftime at Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia Stadium. The match was interrupted due to heavy thunderstorms and torrential rain, forcing a massive 1-hour and 40-minute delay before the play could resume.

While the rest of the team were warming up and resting, the French team Captain was captured walking around, bending over to inspect the waterlogged turf, and actively gesturing to the stadium ground crew. He pointed out specific flooded patches on the grass to help the staff speed up the removal process. He was practically ‘commanding’ the crew with large rollers and squeegees.

Most obviously, the videos quickly went viral on multiple social media pages, with fans remarking that he is acting like a "dictator".

‘The Supreme leader of France right there’: How did the fans react?

The hilarious act quickly took over the internet, with fans labelling him as “The Emperor".

Another user stated, “Bonsoir, American spongeman. I am Generalissimo Mbappé. The floor is too wet. Please sponge, Sir!”

One fan pointed out the ‘head nodding', adding, “he is never beating the allegations.'

A fan exclaimed, “I think after football retirement he deserves the kingship of France.” They are now calling him "Field General Mbappé” and the “Prince of France".

Kylian Mbappé is keeping the football fans entertained through his scores and also through his acts. France is scheduled to face Norway next, on June 27. This is one of the most anticipated matches, as Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland will face each other, fuelling the ultimate battle between the generational footballers.
